Technical Specifications
Product Overview
Electrolytic nickel cathode is refined nickel deposited onto a starter sheet and stripped as a full or cut plate. It is the primary form in which nickel enters the manufacturing chain, at a minimum purity of 99.9% and with the metallic silver-grey surface that indicates a clean deposit.
Nickel is bought for three separate jobs, and they do not all want the same material. As a plating anode it has to dissolve evenly, which depends on the deposit structure and on how the plate has been cut. As an alloying addition in stainless and specialty steels it has to be low in the residuals that embrittle the final product. As a battery precursor it has to be consistent lot to lot, because cathode chemistry tolerates variation far less than a melt does.
Typical Applications
Nickel cathode feeds:
- Electroplating and electroless plating anodes
- Stainless steel and specialty steel production
- Lithium-ion battery cathode precursor materials
- Nickel-based superalloys for high-temperature service
- Catalysts and chemical process applications
Grades, Purity and What to Specify
State the application, since it determines which trace elements need to be capped. Plating operations care about the dissolution behaviour of the plate; alloy producers care about sulphur, carbon and the residual elements that affect toughness; battery material producers care about consistency above all.
For the plate form itself, tell us whether you need full sheets or cut squares, and the dimensions your baskets or charging equipment accept. Plate geometry has a real effect on dissolution and on loading, so it is settled at quotation stage rather than after the container arrives.
Packaging and Loading
Cathode is supplied as full sheets or cut pieces, bundled and strapped for container loading. Plate dimensions, bundle weight and loaded weight per container are confirmed with the quotation.
Quality, Inspection and Documentation
Every lot ships with a certificate of analysis stating the full chemical composition, produced under an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system. That is more than the headline purity figure: it is the residual elements that decide whether two lots at the same stated purity behave the same way in your process.
You can nominate an independent inspection agency — SGS and BV are the two we handle most often — for pre-shipment sampling, weight verification and container sealing. The report is issued to you rather than to us, and you are equally welcome to send your own representative.
Standard export documentation covers the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading, alongside the chemical composition report. If your market requires an additional declaration, tell us at quotation stage rather than after the container is sealed. See the terms of service for how inspection and claims are handled.
Frequently Asked Questions
What purity is the nickel cathode?
99.9% minimum. It is supplied as electrolytic cathode sheets with a metallic silver-grey finish and accompanied by a chemical composition report.
Can the cathode be supplied cut to size?
Yes. Plating operations often need plate cut to suit their baskets, while alloy producers may take full sheets. Give us the dimensions your equipment accepts and the enquiry will be quoted on that basis.
Which industries buy electrolytic nickel cathode?
The three largest uses are electroplating, stainless and specialty steel production, and lithium-ion battery cathode precursors. Nickel-based superalloys and catalysts are also significant.

Buying Minor Metals: What Changes Once You Move Off Copper and Aluminium
A buyer who moves from copper cathode or aluminium ingot to tin, nickel or indium finds that almost none of the purchasing habits carry over. The unit of trade shrinks from the container to the pallet, the price reference changes, the packaging inverts, and the purity figure on its own stops being a sufficient specification.

How Metal Purity Is Verified Before a Shipment Leaves
A purity figure on a quotation is a claim. What a buyer actually needs to know is how that claim will be tested, by whom, and what happens if the result differs. All three are answerable before the order is placed — and answering them is what makes the analysis worth anything.
