SHG — Special High Grade — is the top commercial classification for zinc, defined by a minimum content of 99.995%. That last decimal place is not a marketing refinement. In continuous galvanizing lines the coating weight and adherence on a steel strip depend on the zinc bath behaving consistently, and trace elements such as lead, cadmium and iron are what make a bath drift.
Zinc is used in two quite different ways that pull specification in opposite directions. Galvanizing needs very low lead for a smooth, even coating. Die casting historically used zinc with controlled alloying additions of aluminium and magnesium, where the base metal must still be tight on the trace elements that embrittle castings over time. Both routes start from SHG base metal.

You can nominate an independent inspection agency — SGS and BV are the two we handle most often — for pre-shipment sampling, weight verification and container sealing. The report is issued to you rather than to us, and you are equally welcome to send your own representative.
