Product Overview

Electrolytic cathode is what a copper refinery produces: copper is electrodeposited onto stainless steel blanks, and the resulting plate is the standard unit of trade in the copper industry. Grade A is the designation for cathode whose residual elements are held below the ASTM B115 ceilings, which in normal commercial delivery puts the copper content at 99.99% or above, and it is the reference grade that rod mills, wire drawers and alloy producers plan their melts around.

ASTM B115 is the specification most buyers cite because it fixes the quality of the deposit and not only the chemistry. A cathode that meets the analysis but carries nodules, entrapped electrolyte or excessive slimes still causes problems downstream — those defects change how the plate melts and how much dross it generates. Plate that meets the standard melts predictably, and to a continuous cast line that matters more than a marginal gain in the purity figure.

Typical Applications

Cathode is the input to almost every downstream copper product:

  • Continuous cast copper rod and wire
  • Busbars, switchgear and transformer windings
  • Copper alloy and master alloy production
  • Electroplating anodes
  • High-conductivity specialty applications

Grades, Purity and What to Specify

Grade A cathode is defined by a minimum copper content of 99.99%, but the specification governing acceptance is usually ASTM B115, which also covers the physical condition of the plate. Buyers working to tighter requirements name additional limits on individual elements; bismuth, antimony and arsenic are the ones most often capped for wire drawing.

State the tonnage, the destination port and whether you need the plate full or cut. If your process caps any residual element, give us the figures at quotation stage. They are checked against the lot certificate before the container is sealed, and selecting the right lot in advance is considerably easier than resolving a rejected one afterwards.

Packaging and Loading

Cathode ships as full plate, bundled and strapped, or cut to the dimensions your charging equipment accepts. Bundling method and loaded weight per container are confirmed with the quotation so the packing list matches what your receiving team will see.

Quality, Inspection and Documentation

Every lot ships with a certificate of analysis stating the full chemical composition, produced under an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system. That is more than the headline purity figure: it is the residual elements that decide whether two lots at the same stated purity behave the same way in your process.

You can nominate an independent inspection agency — SGS and BV are the two we handle most often — for pre-shipment sampling, weight verification and container sealing. The report is issued to you rather than to us, and you are equally welcome to send your own representative.

Standard export documentation covers the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading, alongside the chemical composition report. If your market requires an additional declaration, tell us at quotation stage rather than after the container is sealed. See the terms of service for how inspection and claims are handled.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Grade A mean for copper cathode?

Grade A denotes refined copper cathode with a minimum copper content of 99.99%. It is the top commercial designation for electrolytic cathode and the grade most rod mills and wire producers specify.

Do you supply cathode to ASTM B115?

Yes. ASTM B115 is the standard this material is produced and inspected against, and it is stated on the product specification sheet.

Can you hold individual impurity elements to specific limits?

Tell us the element and the maximum value you can accept when requesting a quotation. Residuals such as bismuth, antimony and arsenic are those most often capped for wire drawing, and they are checked against the lot analysis before shipment.
